This viewing stone is a physical record of a transformation. Thousands of years ago, it began as molten magma, pressurized deep underground before erupting as a basaltic lava flow in what is now known as Central Oregon. What you hold now is a "moment caught in time”. After that liquid fire met the air and solidified into form, it somehow made its way into the rushing waters of the Deschutes River. Re-shaped by flowing waters, its dark color and softened edges are a testament to the power of persistence over hardness.
I found this stone while hiking with my dog along a lonely stretch of the river in Central Oregon. I brought it to my yard, where it made a great little landscape stone. Once I learned about the art of viewing stones, I decided it would make a great specimen.
I cut the stone so it had a flat base that presented my favorite viewing angle. The stand (or daiza) is made of mahogany that I saved from the scrap wood pile during my previous life working for a guitar manufacturer. Using a router and bandsaw as well as chisels and carving knives, I shaped it and sanded it smooth. I finished it with a mix of mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax.
Meditation & Care
In your home, let this stone be a focal point for reflection. It is a reminder of the Earth’s capacity for both upheaval and enduring peace.
Note: Because the base of the stone was cut flat, the bottom edges may be sharp. Your stone rests tightly in its custom carved base; however they are not attached. Please handle it mindfully as you find its place in your space.
